🇵🇹 We spent three nights in Lagos and three nights in Albufeira during our 2 Weeks in Portugal. We loved both — for completely different reasons. Here is our honest verdict.
The most common question from travellers planning an Algarve trip: Lagos or Albufeira? It sounds like a simple question. It is not — because they are genuinely different places serving different types of traveller, and the wrong choice can significantly affect your experience.
We did both on our Portugal trip (three nights each) and came away with strong, clear opinions about who each place suits. Here is the complete comparison.

Lagos — Our Personal Favourite
We arrived in Lagos from Lisbon by train (read our Lisbon to Lagos guide) and immediately understood why it is so loved. The walk from the old town south to Ponta da Piedade — across the clifftops above Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, down to the extraordinary sea cave headland — took our breath away. Nothing quite prepares you for the scale and beauty of those carved golden cliffs.
What Lagos Does Better
The coastal scenery. Ponta da Piedade and the sea caves around it are simply the most dramatic coastal landscape we have seen in Europe. The boat tour of the caves (the best activity in the Algarve, in our view) departs from Lagos marina and is unmissable.

Authenticity. The Lagos old town still feels like a real Portuguese community. The main square, the churches, the slave market museum — there is genuine history and culture here that Albufeira's old town, though charming, cannot quite match.
Walking. Lagos is made for walkers. The cliff path from town to Ponta da Piedade, the beach stairs, the old town lanes — you can spend entire days on foot discovering new angles of the coast.
The vibe. Quieter, more relaxed, slightly younger and more independent-traveller in character. Better for couples, solo travellers, and those who want a genuinely Portuguese experience alongside the beaches.
What Lagos Does Worse
Beach variety. The beaches around Lagos are extraordinary but compact — Dona Ana, Camilo, Pinhão, Meia Praia. Albufeira has more options spread over a wider area.
Nightlife. Lagos has a decent bar scene in the old town but nothing like Albufeira's Strip if big-night-out energy is what you are after.

Central Algarve access. Lagos sits at the western end of the Algarve. Getting to Benagil Cave, Carvoeiro, or Faro requires more travel time than from Albufeira.

Albufeira — More Beach, More Action
We arrived in Albufeira from Lagos by Renex express bus (1 hour 15 minutes, €8). Our expectations were honestly modest — Albufeira's reputation as a British package-holiday resort precedes it. But the Old Town, Falésia Beach, and the Benagil cave boat tour converted us.
What Albufeira Does Better
Falésia Beach. The 6km sweep of sand backed by striped rust-red and white cliffs is genuinely one of the most dramatic beaches we have ever seen — and it is easily the Algarve's best beach. Lagos has no equivalent.
Beach variety overall. Albufeira sits in the middle of the Algarve coast, with extraordinary beaches in both directions: São Rafael and Olhos de Água to the east, Galé and Salgados to the west. More options within easy reach than Lagos.

Day trips. Albufeira's central location makes it the ideal hub for Algarve day trips: Benagil Cave and Carvoeiro to the west, Faro and the Ria Formosa to the east (we took the train from Ferreiras station — the Regional 5910, 40 minutes, €3.80, booked on the CP app). See our Things to Do in Faro guide.
Nightlife. If you want club nights, big bars, and late-night energy, Albufeira's Strip (and to a lesser extent the Old Town) delivers in a way Lagos simply does not.
Families. The beach kiosks, watersports, boat trips, and resort-style facilities around Albufeira make it excellent for families.
What Albufeira Does Worse
Coastal drama. Nothing around Albufeira matches the raw visual impact of Ponta da Piedade and the Lagos sea caves.
Authenticity. The Strip is exactly what its reputation suggests. The Old Town is lovely but more tourist-oriented than Lagos. If you want to feel genuinely Portuguese, Lagos wins.

Avoiding crowds. In July and August, Albufeira's most popular beaches are very busy. Lagos beaches get crowded too, but the clifftop walks and hidden coves give you more escape routes.

Who Should Choose Lagos?
- Couples and solo travellers who want stunning coastal scenery, good restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere
- Walkers and outdoor enthusiasts — the cliff walks, kayaking, and coasteering around Lagos are exceptional
- History and culture seekers — the old town, Henry the Navigator's legacy, the slave market museum
- Travellers who want an authentic Portuguese experience alongside world-class beaches
- Those visiting from Lisbon — Lagos is the natural western Algarve base and closer by train
Who Should Choose Albufeira?
- Groups and friends who want nightlife, beach bars, and activity options
- Families who want resort facilities, watersports, and easy beach access
- Central Algarve explorers — best location for reaching Benagil, Carvoeiro, Silves, and Faro
- Beach maximalists — Falésia Beach alone justifies the choice
- Those flying into Faro — Albufeira is 45km from Faro Airport (35 min by car), slightly closer than Lagos (80km)
Do Both — Like We Did
The honest answer is: do not choose — do both. We spent three nights in Lagos then three nights in Albufeira, connected by the Renex express bus. This gave us the best of both: the dramatic cliff walks and sea caves of the western Algarve, and the beach variety and central location of Albufeira.
With two weeks in Portugal (Porto + Lisbon + Algarve), spending 3 nights in Lagos and 3 nights in Albufeira is the perfect Algarve allocation. See our 2 Weeks in Portugal Itinerary for the exact route.
Getting Between Lagos and Albufeira
Bus (recommended): Renex express bus, Lagos bus station → Albufeira. Direct, 1 hour 15 minutes, €8. Comfortable and straightforward.

Car: A22 motorway east. About 50km, 45–50 minutes. Gives you flexibility to stop at beaches along the way (Praia da Luz, Meia Praia, Galé).
Train: No direct service. You would need to go via Tunes — not recommended for this route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lagos better than Albufeira? For scenery, coastal walks, and authenticity — yes. For beach variety, nightlife, and day trip access — Albufeira edges it. The ideal trip includes both.
Is Albufeira more expensive than Lagos? Roughly similar. Peak season (July–August) prices are high in both. May–June and September are significantly cheaper and our recommended times to visit.
Which is closer to Faro Airport? Albufeira (45km, ~35 minutes by car). Lagos is 80km from Faro Airport (~55 minutes). If you are flying into Faro, starting in Albufeira and ending in Lagos (or vice versa) works well logistically.
Can I do a day trip from Lagos to Albufeira (or vice versa)? Yes — the express bus takes 75 minutes each way. But given the distance (50km), it is better to base yourself in each separately if you have the nights available.
