Understanding the 90/180 Day Rule

The Schengen Area allows citizens from many non-EU countries to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. This rule can be confusing because the 180-day window is "rolling"โ€”it looks back from every day of your stay.

How the 180-Day Window Works

To check if you are compliant, you must look at the 180-day period preceding each day of your stay. If you have been in the Schengen Area for more than 90 days in that window, you are in violation of the rule.

Who Does This Rule Apply To?

This rule generally applies to "visa-free" travelers (like those from the US, Canada, Australia, etc.) and those with short-stay C-type visas. It does not apply to EU citizens or those with long-stay visas/residence permits for a specific EU country.
