๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น We stayed in Albufeira for three nights during our 2 Weeks in Portugal. Our accommodation near the Old Town โ€” booked through Booking.com โ€” was a major factor in having a great trip here.

Albufeira is the Algarve's largest resort and accommodation choice is vast โ€” but not all of it is equal. Staying in the wrong part of Albufeira can mean noisy nights on The Strip, inconvenient distances from the best beaches, or overpriced resort complexes that cut you off from the town. This guide tells you exactly where to stay based on our own experience.

The Key Distinction: Old Town vs The Strip

Albufeira has two very distinct centres:

The Old Town (Cidade Velha): The original whitewashed Portuguese quarter, perched on the clifftops above Fisherman's Beach. Charming pedestrian lanes, excellent restaurants, the cliff-top terrace with sea views, and a relatively authentic atmosphere. This is where you want to be based.

The Strip (Avenida Francisco Sรก Carneiro): The modern resort strip running east from the Old Town โ€” dense with British and Irish-themed bars, fast food, souvenir shops, and large package-holiday hotels. Lively (read: noisy) at night. Fine if you want that scene; not recommended if you want a genuine Algarve experience.

Our recommendation: Old Town or within a 5-minute walk of it.

Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in Albufeira

Old Town โ€” Our Choice

Staying in or immediately adjacent to the Old Town gives you everything:

  • Walking distance to Praia dos Pescadores and Praia do Peneco (5 minutes)
  • Walking distance to the best restaurants and bars
  • Easy taxi access to Falรฉsia Beach, Sรฃo Rafael, and the marina
  • A genuine sense of being in Portugal rather than a British resort

Our experience: We booked an Old Town apartment through Booking.com โ€” two bedrooms, a small pool, and a terrace with sea glimpses. โ‚ฌ85 per night in late May. Excellent value and a great base.

The area east of Albufeira towards Falรฉsia beach โ€” where the Sheraton Algarve and a few other luxury hotels sit โ€” is quieter, more upmarket, and has the best beach access (Falรฉsia is right there). Downside: you need a car or taxi for everything.

Best for: Luxury travellers; those with hire cars; beach-focused holidays.

Montechoro / Areias Sรฃo Joรฃo

The hills above the Old Town have a cluster of villa complexes and apartment hotels โ€” typically cheaper than the beachfront, with pools, and quieter than The Strip. A 10-minute walk (steeply downhill) to the Old Town.

Best for: Families with young children; travel budget calculator-conscious travellers who want pool access.

Albufeira Accommodation by Budget

Budget (โ‚ฌ40โ€“โ‚ฌ75 per night)

  • Apartments near the Old Town: Self-catering apartments in the Old Town area represent excellent value. Look for properties with "Old Town" or "Cidade Velha" in the address on Booking.com. Many include pool access.
  • Guesthouses: A number of small guesthouses (pensรตes) operate in the Old Town.

Mid-Range (โ‚ฌ75โ€“โ‚ฌ150 per night)

  • Self-catering apartments with pool: The best choice at this level. Many developments in the Old Town and Montechoro area offer two-bedroom apartments with shared pool for โ‚ฌ80โ€“120 per night.
  • GuestReady apartments: GuestReady's professionally managed apartments offer a step up in quality and service from typical self-catering. Their Algarve properties are a good option for those who appreciate the reliable quality standard we found throughout our Portugal trip.
  • Boutique hotels: Sol e Mar, Hotel Atis, Vila Recife Hotel (Old Town, cliff-top views, good value mid-range)

Luxury (โ‚ฌ150โ€“โ‚ฌ400+ per night)

  • Sheraton Algarve at Pine Cliffs โ€” the finest address in the Albufeira area: clifftop resort above Falรฉsia Beach with multiple pools, tennis, golf, and direct beach access via cliff elevator. Exceptional for families.
  • Conrad Algarve (near Quinta do Lago, slightly east of Albufeira) โ€” the Algarve's top luxury resort hotel.
  • Vilalara Thalassa Resort (Lagoa, near Carvoeiro) โ€” excellent thalassotherapy resort, 30 minutes from Albufeira.

Hotels Near Albufeira Train Station (Ferreiras)

If you are arriving by train from Lisbon or Faro, the train station is at Ferreiras โ€” 6km north of Albufeira town centre. The vast majority of accommodation is in the town itself. Take a taxi (โ‚ฌ6โ€“8, 10 minutes) or bus to your accommodation. Do not book accommodation in Ferreiras itself โ€” it is a rural junction with nothing there.

Getting Between Albufeira and Faro Airport

Faro Airport is 45km from Albufeira โ€” approximately 35โ€“40 minutes by car. Options:

  • Taxi/transfer: Fixed rate taxis are approximately โ‚ฌ45โ€“55 from Albufeira to Faro Airport. Book in advance.
  • Hire car: Best if you are exploring the Algarve coast. Return at the airport.
  • Bus: No direct bus from Albufeira to Faro Airport. Take the bus/taxi to Faro then the bus to the airport.

Many accommodation providers can arrange airport transfers. Ask when booking.

Is it better to stay in Albufeira or Lagos? Lagos has more dramatic coastal scenery (the sea caves and cliffs of Ponta da Piedade) and a more relaxed vibe. Albufeira has more beach variety, livelier nightlife, and is more centrally located in the Algarve. We loved both โ€” see our Lagos guide and Albufeira guide to decide.
