Packing List for Greece
Greece punishes the wrong packing โ slick Acropolis marble, ferry crossings in the meltemi wind, pebble beaches, monastery dress codes, and islands where tap water isn't drinkable. Select your travel month and get a tailored checklist.
What to Pack for Greece
Greece looks effortless in photos, but the practical reality needs preparation. The Acropolis marble has been polished by millions of feet into a surface as slick as ice โ smooth-soled shoes slip. Island-hopping means ferry decks whipped by the meltemi wind, even in August. Many famous beaches are pebble, not sand. And outside Athens and Thessaloniki, tap water on most islands isn't drinkable.
Monastery and church dress codes
Required at Meteora monasteries and most Orthodox churches:
- Covered shoulders for everyone
- Long trousers for men, knee-covering skirts for women (some monasteries lend wrap skirts)
- No swimwear or beach cover-ups
A lightweight scarf or sarong covers shoulders instantly. For Meteora, pack proper trousers or a long skirt โ the dress code is enforced at the door.
Shoes for Greece โ marble and cobbles
The Acropolis, Delphi, and most ancient sites involve uneven, polished stone. Grippy rubber soles matter more than cushioning here. On the islands, strapped sandals beat flip flops โ whitewashed lanes in Santorini and Mykonos are steep, stepped, and slippery at night.
Ferries โ the part nobody packs for
Island-hopping ferries range from glassy-smooth catamarans to rolling open-deck crossings. The meltemi wind (JulyโAugust) makes Aegean crossings genuinely rough. Pack motion sickness tablets, a windproof layer for deck seating, and download tickets offline โ port WiFi fails exactly when you need it.

Greece Packing FAQ
What to pack for Greece in May or June?
The sweet spot โ 22โ29ยฐC, warm sea by June, and thinner crowds. Light summer clothing plus one warm layer for evenings and ferry decks. The sea is still cool in May; a rash vest extends swimming time.
What to pack for Greece in July or August?
Peak heat (30โ38ยฐC) and the meltemi wind. Breathable fabrics only, SPF 50+, a secured sun hat (the wind will steal an unsecured one), and motion sickness tablets โ Aegean crossings are at their roughest. Book ferries early and download tickets offline.
What to pack for Greece in September or October?
September is arguably the best month: 24โ30ยฐC with the warmest sea of the year. Pack as for summer with one extra evening layer. By late October, add a light rain jacket โ and note many island businesses begin closing for the season.
Can I drink tap water in Greece?
In Athens and Thessaloniki, yes โ it's safe and good. On most islands (including Santorini, Mykonos, and the Cyclades generally), no โ supply comes from desalination or shipped water and is not meant for drinking. Budget for bottled water or bring purification. Check specific destinations with our tap water checker tool.
Can I do Greece carry-on only?
Yes โ summer Greece is the easiest carry-on destination in Europe. Lightweight clothing, sandals, and a quick-dry towel fit easily in 40L. The bigger constraint is sunscreen: two full bottles eat into liquid limits, so consider buying one large bottle after security or at an Athens supermarket before the islands.
