Mastering European Budget Airline Luggage Rules: Underseat vs. Overhead
Flying with ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs) like Ryanair, Wizz Air, EasyJet, or Vueling is a brilliant way to explore Europe on a budget. However, these airlines keep their base fares incredibly low by charging premium fees for luggage. Understanding the distinction between a free underseat personal item and a paid overhead cabin bag is the key to avoiding astronomical gate penalties.
The Personal Item (Underseat Bag)
A personal item is a small bag that must fit completely under the seat in front of you. This is the only type of baggage included for free in standard economy tickets on Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz Air, and Vueling.
- Ryanair Limit: 40 x 25 x 20 cm. This is notoriously strict, but flexible bags (soft duffels or half-packed backpacks) can easily squish into the metal sizer.
- EasyJet Limit: 45 x 36 x 20 cm. A slightly more generous limit allowing a 30L backpack if packed carefully.
- Wizz Air Limit: 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Similar to Ryanair but slightly wider.
The Cabin Bag (Overhead Bin Upgrade)
If you need more space, you'll need to upgrade to standard overhead baggage. This allows you to bring a trolley bag or large travel backpack (usually up to 10kg or 15kg depending on the carrier) measuring around 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
Pre-Booking Upgrades
Always pre-book your cabin luggage upgrade when booking your ticket online. Doing so usually costs €10 to €25, whereas paying at the boarding gate costs upwards of €50 to €75.
Soft vs. Hard Shell
We strongly recommend travel backpacks or soft-sided duffels instead of rigid spinner trolley bags. A soft pack can compress into a tight sizing frame if it is slightly overpacked, while a rigid spinner is guaranteed to fail.
How to Pass the Gate Sizer Test
Low-cost carrier boarding gates can feel high-stress. If you are worried about your bag's dimensions:
- Wear your heavy layers: If your bag is bulging, put on your heaviest jacket, sweaters, or boots. You can pack these back into your bag once you board.
- Keep handles and wheels in mind: Official airline sizers measure the absolute limits, including wheels, pockets, and grab handles. Don't buy a bag that is exactly 55cm long if its wheels add another 5cm!
- Avoid looking overloaded: Gate agents are trained to look for struggling travelers. Carry your backpack comfortably on your shoulders to avoid drawing unnecessary inspection attention.
