How does the road trip gas calculator work?
Enter your origin, destination, fuel efficiency (MPG or L/100km), and your local gas or petrol price. The calculator fetches the real driving distance via OSRM/OpenStreetMap, calculates exactly how much fuel you need, and returns the total fuel cost plus a per-person breakdown. Add a toll estimate for a complete road trip budget.
What gas or petrol price should I enter?
Use your current local pump price. Metric mode defaults to €1.60/L (Western European petrol average). Imperial mode defaults to $3.50/gal (US average). Diesel drivers should enter their diesel price — the fuel consumption calculation is the same.
How do I calculate gas cost for a road trip?
The formula is: (distance ÷ fuel efficiency) × fuel price. In metric: (km ÷ 100) × L/100km × €/L. In imperial: miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon. This calculator does it automatically once you enter your route and vehicle efficiency.
Does the calculator include toll costs automatically?
No — toll costs vary widely by country, route, and vehicle class. Enter your own estimate in the tolls field. For European routes, check national motorway authority sites (Bison Futé for France, Autostrade per l'Italia, Tolltickets for multi-country trips).
How accurate is the road distance used?
Road distances use OSRM with OpenStreetMap data — generally within 1–3% of navigation app results. The tool picks the fastest driving route; if you plan to take a different road, adjust the distance manually.
