🇵🇹 We spent three nights in Lagos as part of our 2 Weeks in Portugal. We stayed in an Airbnb in the old town and it was genuinely one of the best accommodation decisions of the trip. Here is everything we learned about Lagos accommodation.

Lagos is compact enough that almost any accommodation in or near the old town works well as a base. The beach cliffs, the marina, the restaurants, and the bus station are all within 15–20 minutes' walk. The most important decision is whether you want to stay in the old town (walkable to everything, atmospheric, zero need for a car) or near Meia Praia (quieter, better for families, requires a car or ferry for the clifftop beaches).

Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in Lagos

Old Town (Centro Histórico) — Our Recommendation

The old town is the heart of Lagos — whitewashed lanes, the statue of Henry the Navigator, baroque churches, and excellent restaurants all within a few pedestrian blocks. Staying here means you can walk to Dona Ana beach (15 min south), Meia Praia (20 min north), the marina (5 min), and the bus station (10 min).

Best for: All types of travellers. The old town works for everyone — couples, families, solo travellers, groups.

Accommodation: Mainly apartments, boutique guesthouses, and small hotels. A good self-catering apartment in the old town is our top recommendation.

Our experience: We stayed in an old town apartment booked through Airbnb — two bedrooms, rooftop terrace with pool, five minutes from the main square, three minutes from the bus to the marina. €110 per night. Excellent value and exactly the kind of self-catering setup that makes a Lagos stay so good.

Marina / Meia Praia Side

The area around the marina and north of the river towards Meia Praia beach has more resort-style hotels and apartment complexes. Good for watersports access; slightly further from the old town and the clifftop beaches.

Best for: Families who want beach resort facilities; watersports enthusiasts; those with a hire car.

A small cluster of hotels and villas sits on the clifftops above Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. This is the most dramatic and expensive location — waking up to cliff views over the Atlantic. Not walkable to the old town (15–20 min on foot) but the most spectacular setting.

Best for: Romantic breaks; those who prioritise beach access over old town atmosphere; longer stays.

Lagos Accommodation by travel budget calculator

Budget (€50–€80 per night)

  • Hostel Bilge and similar Lagos hostels — great social scene, private rooms and dorms available
  • Guesthouses near the bus station — basic but clean, good value
  • Search Booking.com filtered by "city centre" and under €80 for budget guesthouses

Mid-Range (€80–€150 per night)

This is where Lagos accommodation really excels. Self-catering apartments in the old town represent outstanding value at this level.

  • Old town apartments via Airbnb — our choice. Look for properties described as "old town" or "historical centre" with pool access (many buildings have rooftop terraces/pools). Excellent for stays of 2+ nights.
  • GuestReady managed apartmentsGuestReady has a growing presence in the Algarve. Their managed apartments offer the quality and service consistency we appreciated across Portugal on this trip.
  • Boutique hotels: Hotel Mar e Sol, Vivenda Miranda (clifftop, stunning views), Orada Marina Hotel

Luxury (€150–€350+ per night)

  • Vivenda Miranda — a beautiful whitewashed boutique hotel perched on the clifftops above Praia do Porto de Mós, with a pool and garden views over the Atlantic. One of the best hotels in the western Algarve.
  • Cascade Wellness Resort — a large resort hotel with full spa facilities and multiple pools, 3km east of Lagos on the clifftops.
  • Tivoli Lagos — the city's most established luxury hotel, with good pool and facilities.

Practical Tips for Lagos Accommodation

Book early for July–August: Lagos fills up fast in peak summer. Good apartments book out months in advance. If visiting in July or August, book at least 8–10 weeks ahead.

Self-catering vs hotel: Self-catering apartments are our preferred choice in Lagos — the markets and fish stalls are excellent, and having a kitchen saves significant money over a week-long stay. We booked our apartment through Airbnb and found the range of old town options excellent.

Car or no car? If staying in the old town, you do not need a car to enjoy Lagos itself. All the main beaches are walkable. You do need a car (or organised tours) for Sagres, Praia da Luz, and the surf beaches further west.

Parking: Old town Lagos has limited parking — expensive (€1–1.50/hour) and hard to find in summer. If you have a hire car, look for accommodation with private parking.
