What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?
A digital nomad visa is a long-stay residence permit created specifically for remote workers — people whose income comes from clients or employers outside the country where they are living. Unlike a standard tourist visa (which typically allows 30–90 days and prohibits any form of work), a digital nomad visa lets you live legally in a country for 6 months to 10 years, work freely on your laptop, and in many cases access local banking, healthcare, and co-working spaces.
The category exploded after 2020 when remote work became mainstream. By 2026, over 50 countries have launched official programs — but the quality, cost, and practicality vary enormously. This tool covers the 17 most established, accessible programs and lets you filter by what actually matters to you: how much you earn, where you want to live, and how long you plan to stay.
Digital Nomad Visa vs Tourist Visa
The most important distinction is legal status. On a tourist visa, working remotely is technically illegal in most countries — even if border guards rarely ask. A digital nomad visa makes your status explicit and legal, which matters if you need to open a bank account, rent an apartment long-term, access local healthcare, or simply sleep soundly without worrying about visa runs every 90 days.
Tourist visas are also time-limited and non-renewable. Digital nomad visas range from 6 months (Cape Verde) to an extraordinary 10 years (Thailand LTR). Most European programs grant 12 months and are renewable — several lead to permanent residency after 5 years.
The Two Things That Matter Most: Income and Tax
Every program has a minimum income requirement — the monthly amount you must prove you earn from remote sources. These range from roughly $750/month (Colombia) to $6,700/month (Thailand). Most European programs cluster between $2,000–$4,000/month. Your income level is usually the single biggest filter: if you are a junior freelancer, Portugal and Colombia are your best options. If you are earning $100k+ per year, the UAE and Thailand become more interesting.
The second factor that separates programs is tax treatment. Some countries (Croatia, Colombia, UAE, Mauritius) simply do not tax foreign-source income during your stay. Others like Portugal (NHR regime at 20%) and Greece (7% flat rate) offer attractive tax deals but require a separate tax residency application. A handful — Brazil, Latvia, Estonia — do impose normal income tax if you stay beyond 183 days. If you plan to stay long-term in one country, the tax rules matter as much as the visa rules.
How to Read the Cards in This Tool
Each card shows the minimum monthly income in USD, the one-time application fee, and the initial stay duration. The difficulty rating reflects how complex the paperwork is — not how likely you are to be approved. Easy = online form with standard documents. Moderate = in-person consulate visit or notarised documents needed. Complex = multiple supporting documents, interviews, or professional translation typically required. Click "Requirements & tax" on any card to see the full checklist before applying.

How to Choose the Right Program
Four questions that narrow the field to the right visa for your situation
What is your monthly remote income?
This is the hard filter. If you earn under $2,000/month, your realistic options are Colombia, Portugal, Cape Verde, and Mauritius. Between $2,000–$5,000/month opens up most of Europe. Above $5,000/month gives you the full list including UAE and Thailand.
Do you need Schengen Area access?
If you want to travel freely around Europe, you need a European program — Portugal, Spain, Estonia, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Hungary, or Latvia. A DNV from Colombia or UAE does not give you unrestricted EU travel.
How long do you plan to stay?
For a single 6–12 month stint, nearly any program works. If you want a permanent base for 2+ years, focus on renewable programs (Portugal, Spain, Greece, Malta) that lead to permanent residency. For pure flexibility, Colombia's 24-month grant is outstanding value.
Does the tax situation matter to you?
If you earn a significant income and plan to stay > 183 days, tax matters a lot. Croatia's full tax exemption is unmatched in the EU. Portugal's NHR regime and Greece's 7% flat rate are attractive for higher earners. UAE has zero personal income tax full stop.

How we built this Digital Nomad Visa comparison
Data was compiled from official government immigration portals, embassy guidance, and nomad community reports as of June 2026. Income thresholds are converted to USD at approximate exchange rates.
Official sources only
Every program listed links to the relevant government portal. Income and fee figures are taken directly from official immigration guidance, not third-party summaries.
USD conversion
Minimum income requirements are shown in USD for easy comparison. Original currency thresholds are preserved in the requirements section of each card.
Tax notes are simplified
Tax summaries are intentionally brief and designed to flag key differences, not replace professional advice. Tax residency rules are complex — consult a local accountant before making decisions.
Not legal or tax advice
This tool is for initial research only. Immigration rules change frequently. Verify all requirements on the official government portal and consult an immigration specialist if needed.
