Frequently Asked Questions
What is ETIAS and how is it different from a visa?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization for travelers who do not need a Schengen visa. There is no embassy visit, no biometrics appointment, and no interview — just an online form. It screens travelers against EU security databases before arrival. If you need a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not apply to you at all.
When does ETIAS start?
The EU plans to launch ETIAS in the last quarter of 2026, after the Entry/Exit System (EES) completes its rollout. A grace period of around six months is planned, during which border guards will admit travelers without ETIAS. Confirm the live date on the official europa.eu ETIAS page before travelling.
How much does ETIAS cost?
€20 per application (the fee was raised from the originally announced €7). Applicants under 18 or over 70 at the time of application pay nothing, though they still need the authorization itself.
Which countries does ETIAS cover?
All Schengen Area members plus Cyprus — 30 European countries in total. Ireland is not covered (it has its own immigration rules). The UK is no longer in the EU and instead runs its own ETA scheme for visitors.
Can my ETIAS application be refused?
Yes, but refusals are rare — the vast majority of applications are auto-approved within minutes. Flagged applications go to manual review, which can take up to 30 days, so apply at least a month before travel once the system is live.
