🇵🇹 We flew into Faro Airport at the start of our Algarve leg and transferred straight to Albufeira. Here's what we found — including the option we'd avoid on a hot afternoon with luggage.

Faro Airport is the gateway to the Algarve — but Albufeira, the region's most popular resort town, is 43km to the west. That gap is easy to cover, but how you cover it makes a real difference to your arrival experience, your budget, and your stress levels.

The good news: Albufeira is one of the best-connected towns in the Algarve from Faro Airport. The bad news: the cheapest option involves two changes and is genuinely exhausting with a suitcase. Here's the full breakdown so you can make the right call.

Faro Airport to Albufeira: Options at a Glance

Option 1: Private Taxi from Faro Airport to Albufeira

The most straightforward option. Taxis queue outside the arrivals hall at Faro Airport and the fare to Albufeira is metered — expect €45–€60 depending on traffic and exact drop-off in Albufeira (Old Town vs strip vs your villa).

Journey time: 40–50 minutes on the A22 motorway.

Tips:

• There is a toll on the A22 — this will be added to your fare (usually €3–€4 extra). Don't be surprised by this.
• Night arrivals (after 21:00) carry a surcharge of about 20%.
• The driver will put your bags in the boot — tip €2–€3 if they help with luggage.
• Licensed airport taxis are white with a green roof sign. Do not accept rides from unlicensed drivers inside the terminal.

Verdict: Worth it if you're two or more people, arrive late at night, or just want to get to your accommodation without thinking. Split between two people it's about €25 each — barely more than a bus.

Option 2: Pre-Booked Private Transfer

Booking a private airport transfer in advance fixes the price and removes the queuing. A driver will meet you in arrivals with a sign showing your name, help with bags, and take you directly to your accommodation address in Albufeira.

Prices for a standard private transfer Faro → Albufeira:

• 1–3 passengers: around €45–€55
• 4–6 passengers (minivan): €55–€70
• 7–8 passengers (larger van): €70–€85

The budget option — but it takes effort. There is no direct bus from the airport to Albufeira. You need to:

1. Walk or take a free shuttle to Faro bus terminal (about 10 minutes from arrivals, or a 5-minute free airport shuttle)
2. Take an EVA Bus or Rede Expressos service to Albufeira bus terminal
3. Walk or take a local taxi from Albufeira bus terminal to your accommodation

EVA Bus runs several times daily. Journey Faro bus terminal → Albufeira: approximately 55 minutes. Price: around €5–€7 per person.

Timetables change seasonally — check rede-expressos.pt or eva-bus.com for current schedules.

With luggage: Manageable but not comfortable. Luggage goes in the hold (you load it yourself) and you exit at Albufeira bus terminal, which is a taxi ride from Old Town or the strip.

Verdict: Good for solo budget travellers with a small backpack and no rush. Not recommended for families, heavy luggage, or night arrivals when buses are infrequent.

Option 4: Train from Faro Airport to Albufeira

Technically possible — but not recommended.

The route involves:

1. Shuttle or taxi from airport to Faro train station (about 10 minutes)
2. Train from Faro → Ferreiras (the station serving Albufeira) — around 40 minutes, €3.80 per person, bought on the CP app or at the station (queues can be long at peak times)
3. Taxi or bus from Ferreiras station to Albufeira centre — another 15–20 minutes and €10–€15 by taxi

Total: around 2+ hours door to door, with two vehicle changes. The train itself is pleasant (we took it back from Albufeira to Faro on a day trip) — but arriving this way after a flight with luggage is exhausting.

Buy tickets on the CP app (Comboios de Portugal) — skip the station queues.

Verdict: Fine for the return journey (Albufeira → Faro for a day trip), genuinely poor for an airport transfer with bags.

Option 5: Rental Car from Faro Airport

If you're planning to explore the Algarve widely — beaches, hilltop villages, hidden coves — a rental car is by far the best way to do it.

All major rental companies (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Avis) have desks in the Faro Airport arrivals hall. Prices in shoulder season start from around €25–€35/day for a small car; peak summer (July–August) prices rise significantly so book well ahead.

Drive from Faro Airport to Albufeira:

• Take the EN125 or the A22 (toll motorway — faster)
• A22 toll: around €3.40 one-way; pay by card at toll booths or use a Via Verde transponder

The return journey uses the same options in reverse. A few practical notes:

• Taxi: Meter runs both ways; budget €45–€60. Ask your accommodation to call one the night before if leaving early.
• Bus: EVA/Rede buses from Albufeira terminal to Faro bus terminal, then shuttle to airport. Allow 2.5 hours total.
• Train: From Ferreiras station (served by local taxis from Albufeira centre) to Faro, then taxi to airport. We bought our tickets on the CP app — highly recommended as station queues can be 20 minutes. Regional 5910 train, €3.80 each way.
