The Rule Bites Hardest When Trips Feel Routine
Post-Brexit travel is not just about annual holidays. Weekend flights, half-term trips, family visits, and winter sun all add up inside the same rolling window.
Spain winter stays
A January-to-March stay can use nearly the whole allowance, leaving little space for Easter or early summer trips.
France second homes
Short frequent visits can be harder to count than one long stay because every arrival and departure day still counts.
EU road trips
Crossing from France into Belgium, Germany, Italy, or Spain does not reset anything. It is one shared Schengen clock.

UK Citizens and Schengen Days
Do UK citizens follow the Schengen 90/180-day rule after Brexit?
Yes. UK citizens are now treated as non-EU short-stay visitors for Schengen travel unless they hold a qualifying residence permit or long-stay visa. The standard limit is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period.
Does owning a home in Spain or France change the 90-day rule?
No. Owning property does not by itself grant extra Schengen stay days. UK second-home owners still need to track the 90/180-day rule unless they have a valid residence status or long-stay visa.
Will ETIAS replace a visa for UK citizens?
ETIAS is expected to be a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers. It does not replace residence permits, does not allow work, and does not extend the 90/180-day allowance.
Does time in Ireland count against Schengen days?
No. Ireland is outside the Schengen Area, so time spent in Ireland does not count toward the Schengen 90-day allowance.
