I stayed at Hotel Primula in Troisdorf for one night as a deliberate cost decision: we had spent the day at Movie Park Germany, needed somewhere to rest before a full day in Cologne the next morning, and the price difference between Troisdorf and Cologne hotels was significant enough to make the 12 km drive worthwhile.

The hotel delivered what it promised: clean room, included breakfast, and a bed after a long theme park day. But the parking situation caught us off guard, and it is worth explaining in detail so you do not have the same friction on arrival.

Why I Chose Hotel Primula Over a Cologne Hotel

The logic was straightforward: Cologne hotels โ€” even mid-range ones โ€” price up noticeably compared to nearby towns. Troisdorf is 12 km from Cologne city centre and is well connected by S-Bahn, so staying here and driving or taking the train into Cologne the next day is a viable strategy when hotel rates in Cologne are not justified for a single overnight stop.

We also needed somewhere close to Movie Park Germany, which is right there in Bottrop โ€” about 30 minutes north of Troisdorf. After a day at the park, no one wanted a complicated journey. Hotel Primula was a practical, low-friction overnight stop between the two.

Chasing Whereabouts Hotel Review Scorecard

Review ParameterMy ScoreNotes from this stay
Location fit4/5Smart choice if using it as a Cologne overflow base or Movie Park stopover.
Transport / access3.5/5Troisdorf has S-Bahn connections to Cologne. Drove there ourselves so cannot speak to local transit in detail.
Room comfort3.5/5Clean and functional. Nothing luxury, nothing broken.
Sleep quality3.5/5No notable disturbances.
Bathroom3.5/5Standard and clean.
Food and drink3.5/5Breakfast was included and fairly good. One free sparkling water in the room on arrival.
Parking logistics2.5/5Workable but confusing on first arrival. Read the parking section below before you arrive.
Price transparency4/5Hotel rate was competitive. Parking cost was not complex once understood, but the setup is not obvious.
Overall score3.7/5Honest value โ€” not a hotel you remember fondly, but one you would use again for the same purpose.

The Parking Situation โ€” What You Need to Know

This is the part most reviews skip, and it caused us confusion on arrival. I am going to explain it properly.

Hotel Primula's parking is located inside the shared Galeria parking structure. There is a common parking area which is also used by Galeria shoppers, and Hotel Primula has its own designated spaces within that same car park.

Here is where the confusion happens:

When we arrived, we pulled into what seemed like the obvious hotel parking area. Our car sat in what turned out to be the common Galeria parking space โ€” not the hotel's designated section โ€” for more than five minutes before we figured out we needed to move it into the Primula-specific area.

Because of those first few minutes in the common area, we were charged โ‚ฌ1.50 for the common parking time, on top of the โ‚ฌ6 overnight hotel parking fee.

So the total parking for one night was โ‚ฌ7.50, not โ‚ฌ6.

This is entirely avoidable. When you arrive:

  • Go directly to reception and ask them to confirm exactly which spaces are the Primula-reserved spots.
  • Do not leave your car in the common Galeria area while you check in โ€” even briefly.
  • The parking structure is shared, and the metering starts immediately in the common zone.

Once in the correct hotel spaces, the overnight parking at โ‚ฌ6 is a fair price for the area. It just took us an unnecessary extra charge to learn the setup.

The Room

Clean and functional. No issues, no surprises, no amenities that stood out positively or negatively.

The room did what a recovery room after a theme park day needs to do: it was comfortable enough to sleep in, had a proper bed, and the bathroom was clean. We also found one complimentary bottle of sparkling water (Sprudelwasser) in the room, which was a small but appreciated touch.

This is not a boutique hotel. Do not expect design, do not expect extras. Expect a tidy, basic room that works for a one-night stop.

Breakfast

Breakfast was included in our rate and it was fairly good โ€” not exceptional, but solidly above what I would call a minimal continental spread.

It covered the essentials well enough that we left for Cologne fed and without needing to stop for a second breakfast in the city. For an overnight stay where the priority is price and practicality, an included breakfast of this quality adds real value.

Location โ€” Troisdorf as a Cologne Base

Troisdorf is 12 km from Cologne city centre. By car, this is a short and straightforward drive with no toll roads. By S-Bahn (S12 line), Troisdorf is also connected directly to Cologne Hauptbahnhof.

If you are staying for one or two nights and your primary reason for visiting is Cologne, this is a workable base โ€” not as convenient as being in Cologne, but noticeably cheaper. The trade-off is roughly:

OptionTypical costTrade-off
Cologne city centre hotelHigherNo commute, easy evening access
Hotel Primula TroisdorfLower12 km drive or S-Bahn into Cologne, quieter location

For a single night between Movie Park Germany and Cologne, Troisdorf removes the need to pay Cologne hotel rates for what is essentially a rest stop. That is the use case where Hotel Primula is genuinely worth considering.

What I Liked

  • Noticeably cheaper than equivalent Cologne hotels
  • Clean room with no issues
  • Breakfast included and good enough quality
  • One complimentary sparkling water in the room
  • 12 km from Cologne โ€” an easy drive for a day trip
  • Good stopping point after Movie Park Germany

What I Did Not Like

  • The parking setup is inside Galeria's shared car park and not clearly signposted for first-time arrivals
  • We were charged an unexpected โ‚ฌ1.50 for the few minutes we sat in the common parking area before locating the Primula spaces
  • No standout quality in any category โ€” it is entirely functional but unremarkable

Who Should Book Hotel Primula Troisdorf?

Hotel Primula makes sense if:

  • You want a cheap overnight base near Cologne and do not mind a 12 km commute
  • You have a car and are visiting Movie Park Germany, with a Cologne day planned afterwards
  • You care more about price and cleanliness than design or amenities
  • Breakfast included in the rate matters to your budget

I would think harder before booking if:

  • You want to stay out late in Cologne and need walkable access to the city
  • You are arriving without a car (check S-Bahn schedules before committing)
  • You need guaranteed easy parking with zero confusion on arrival

Final Rating

3.7 out of 5.

Hotel Primula did its job. The room was clean, breakfast was decent, and the price was the right reason to book it. The parking friction on arrival cost it half a point โ€” but now that you have read this review, you can avoid it entirely.

For the specific combination of Movie Park Germany plus Cologne in one trip, staying in Troisdorf overnight is a sound strategy. Hotel Primula is the practical hotel that makes it work.
