Cologne Cable Car Review: Is the Kölner Seilbahn Worth It? (2026)

The Cologne Cable Car crosses the Rhine in 8 minutes with views of the Cathedral. It's a minor attraction but a pleasant one — especially if you have the KölnPass. Here's the honest verdict.

I rode the Cologne Cable Car (Kölner Seilbahn) in May 2026 during my Cologne Tourism collaboration trip. My partner and baby came along. The cable car was included free with our KölnPass — no financial stake in recommending it. Here's what I actually thought.

The short version: it's not a must-do. It's 8 minutes across the Rhine with decent views. But it's pleasant, the gondola is large enough for a pushchair, and if you have the KölnPass — which includes it free — it's an easy yes. Without the pass, at around €8 return, you're paying for novelty. That's a personal call.

My Personal Verdict: Worth it — free with KölnPass

"The Cologne Cable Car is a pleasant 8-minute Rhine crossing with decent views and a fun novelty factor. It's not a major attraction on its own — but with the KölnPass (which includes it free), it's an easy yes. Without the pass, at ~€8 return, it's more of a treat than a must-do."

Insider Tip:Combine it with a walk in Rheinpark on the other side — cross by cable car, walk 20-30 min in the park, cross back on Zoobrücke bridge for variety. More satisfying than doing it as a pure out-and-back.

What Is the Cologne Cable Car?

The Kölner Seilbahn is an aerial tramway that crosses the Rhine between the Flora/Riehler Straße station (near Cologne Zoo, on the west bank) and Rheinpark on the east bank. The crossing distance is around 400 metres. Each gondola holds approximately 28 passengers.

It's been part of Cologne's landscape since 1957 — built for the Federal Garden Show that year, then retained as a permanent fixture. It's the only remaining cable car crossing the Rhine in Germany, which gives it a certain historical novelty that the ride itself alone wouldn't quite justify.

One thing to be clear about: it only operates April through October. If you're planning a winter trip to Cologne, the cable car won't be running. In the warmer months it operates roughly 10am–6pm, though you should check cologne-tourism.de for the current schedule before making it part of your plan.

The Ride Itself

You board at the Flora station — there's a small ticket booth, modest queue on busier days. The gondola is large and enclosed with large windows, open to proper views. It doesn't feel claustrophobic.

Once you're moving, the crossing takes about 8 minutes. Here's what you actually see:

The Rhine below. Wide, grey-green, with barge traffic moving steadily. Rhine barge traffic is surprisingly hypnotic — these enormous vessels, fully loaded, navigating a current that's stronger than it looks. It adds something the views don't on their own.

Cologne Cathedral. Visible to the south, in the distance. It's not the dominant feature of the view — you're not hovering directly above it. But it's there, identifiable, and a decent photo opportunity.

Cologne Zoo to the north, its trees and enclosures visible below.

Rheinpark on the east bank as you approach — a flat green expanse alongside the river. That's where you're heading.

With a baby: no issues. The gondola is fully enclosed and large enough to bring a pushchair in without folding it. Our baby was engaged the whole time — movement, height, water. A good combination at that age.

On the Other Side: Rheinpark

Don't cross and immediately come back. That's the trap.

Rheinpark is a flat parkland area along the east bank of the Rhine. It's not dramatic — no major landmarks — but it's a genuinely pleasant space for a 20–30 minute walk. Riverside path, open grass, a café that operates seasonally. The scale of the Rhine feels different at ground level here than it does from the city side.

The view back toward Cologne is actually the standout. From Rheinpark, looking west across the Rhine, the Cathedral dominates the skyline properly — unobstructed, with the river in the foreground. Bring a camera. It's one of the better Cathedral viewpoints and most people visiting Cologne never stand on this side.

Better than the out-and-back: cross by cable car, walk north along the riverbank to the Zoobrücke bridge (about 15 minutes), cross back to the west bank on foot, and walk or take the U-Bahn back from there. Creates a proper loop. Takes about an hour total. More satisfying than riding back the same way.

Cologne Cable Car Ticket Prices (2026)

TicketPrice
Adult one-way~€5
Adult return~€8
Child one-way~€3
With KölnPassFree

These are 2026 estimates — confirm at the ticket booth or via cologne-tourism.de before visiting.

With KölnPass: included free, normally saving around €8 per adult. If you're already considering the KölnPass for its other inclusions (free cable car, discounts at the Chocolate Museum, hop-on hop-off bus, and more), the cable car becomes a genuine bonus rather than an additional cost. My KölnPass review covers whether the pass is worth it overall — the short answer is yes if you're spending two or more days in Cologne.

Is It Worth It Without the KölnPass?

At ~€8 return for an adult: it depends on what you're after.

If you have half an hour, enjoy novel transport experiences, and want a Rhine crossing that isn't just walking across a bridge — it's pleasant and memorable in a low-key way. The barge traffic, the height, the views — they're not spectacular but they're genuinely enjoyable. And the Rheinpark loop makes it feel like a proper excursion rather than a fairground ride.

If you're on a tight two-day schedule trying to fit in the Cathedral, Chocolate Museum, Rheinauhafen, and the old town — €8 per person starts competing with things that deliver more. The Cathedral tower climb, the Chocolate Museum, the Fragrance Museum — all have more substance per euro.

My honest position: with the KölnPass, it's an effortless yes. Without it, it's a 3.5 out of 5 that earns its rating mostly through novelty and the Rheinpark payoff.

Getting There

U-Bahn or Tram line 18 to Riehler Straße/Seilbahn — the stop name literally references the cable car, so you can't miss it. From Cologne Cathedral it takes about 15 minutes. The station is adjacent to Cologne Zoo, so combining both into a half-day makes sense if you're travelling with young children.

Walking from the Cathedral is possible but takes around 45 minutes north along the Rhine — fine if you want the walk, not efficient if you don't.

Practical Notes

  • Check operating status before you go — the cable car can close for maintenance mid-season with limited notice. Seasonal closures (November–March) are fixed, but weather and maintenance can affect specific days.
  • Combine with Cologne Zoo — the zoo entrance is a 2-minute walk from the cable car station. Half-day family plan: cable car across, Rheinpark walk, cable car or Zoobrücke back, Cologne Zoo in the afternoon.
  • Don't skip Rheinpark — the view back to the Cathedral from the east bank is one of the better ones in the city. Worth 20 minutes even if you just turn around and come back across.
  • Pushchair / wheelchair: the gondola is accessible.
