How to Get to Limburg from Frankfurt

By Car:

Limburg is about a 50-minute drive from Frankfurt, mostly via the A3 motorway. I drove and it was an easy, relaxed trip — the town is well signposted from the motorway.

By Train:

You can also take a regional train (RE) from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Limburg Süd, which takes around 45–60 minutes. The town center is about a 10-minute walk from Limburg Süd station. If you're coming from further away, Limburg also has an ICE stop (Limburg Süd) on the Cologne–Frankfurt high-speed line.

Where to Park: Stadthalle Parking (Practical Info)

I parked at the Stadthalle parking garage in the city center, and honestly, it's the best spot for a day visit — it's a short walk from the old town and the cathedral.

Cost: I paid €9 for 6 hours. Fair warning: some Google reviews still claim ~€7 for longer stays, but the current rate at the Stadthalle garage is higher — budget around €9 for a full day trip.

Pro tip: take the lift up to the top level — you'll come out right at a lovely fountain at the square level, and from there the old town unfolds in front of you. It's a magical first impression.

A Note on Visiting on a Sunday in Summer

We visited on a hot Sunday (~31°C), and there are a few things to know:

• Most shops were closed (Sunday), only a few small shops stayed open.
• There are no drinking fountains in the old town — we looked! Make sure to buy drinks, and note that only 600ml bottles were available, at premium prices.
• The heat is intense — the town is very hilly, and walking up from the river to the cathedral is tiring in summer. Bring hats and water.

With that said, the town was still magical — and the lack of crowds made it even more pleasant.

Stop 1: Limburger Dom (Cathedral) — Free Entry

The Limburger Dom (Limburg Cathedral, also called Georgsdom) is the star of the show — a stunning Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with seven towers, perched on a hill above the town. It's visible from almost everywhere in the old town, and the red-and-white painted towers are unmistakable.

Entry is completely free — which makes it one of the best free things to do in Limburg.

Honest note: during our visit the cathedral was under renovation — scaffolding covered parts of the exterior and the interior was partially fenced off. It was still beautiful, but we couldn't fully appreciate it. Check the current status before your trip if seeing the untouched interior matters to you.

Family tip: right next to the cathedral is the Diözesanmuseum (Diocesan Museum, home of the famous Limburger Staurothek cross reliquary) — it was closed when we visited, but its viewing point is a lifesaver in summer: a drinking water tap, nice seating, and a play area with a trampoline. Our daughter absolutely loved the trampoline, and it gave us a shaded rest stop with a view.

Stop 2: The Fairytale Old Town

The old town of Limburg is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval centers — narrow cobbled lanes, crooked half-timbered houses painted in warm colors, and little squares around every corner.

Just wander — the best thing about Limburg is getting lost in its streets. The Diezer Straße is the main shopping street (busy on weekdays, quiet on Sundays), and the side alleys leading up toward the cathedral are pure fairytale material.

Stop 3: Fischmarkt (Fish Market Square) and a Coffee Break

Walking down from the cathedral, we ended up in the Fischmarkt area — one of the most charming corners of Limburg, with cafés, small restaurants, and historic buildings.

What we did: grabbed a fresh iced coffee for €3.90 a glass and sat in the square watching the world go by. It's the perfect afternoon pause.

Family tip: there's a kids' play area between the Fischmarkt and the old bridge — great for letting little ones burn off energy before crossing the river.

Stop 4: Alte Lahnbrücke (Old Bridge) — Best Cathedral View

The Alte Lahnbrücke is a stone bridge from the 14th century that crosses the Lahn river — and it gives you the single best view of the cathedral. This is the classic Limburg photo: the seven-tower cathedral rising behind the old bridge arches.

Don't skip this: there's a lower walking lane below the bridge level — from there you see the bridge arches with the cathedral behind, one of the most beautiful angles in the whole town.

For cyclists: the bridge area has an ADAC bike station with a repair stand and an air pump — handy if you're doing the Lahn cycle path.

Where to Eat: Tanduri (Indian Restaurant)

After all that walking, we had lunch at Tanduri, an Indian restaurant in Limburg — and it was genuinely excellent.

What we ordered: Chhole Bhature and Samosa Chaat — really tasty, and the service was prompt even though we were a bigger group (worth booking a table in advance).

Cost: around €36 for two people — very reasonable for the quality.

Important: the kitchen stops at 2:15 PM — get there before 14:15 or you'll miss lunch!
