How to Get to Idstein from Frankfurt
By Car:
Idstein is about a 40-minute drive from Frankfurt. It's an easy, scenic drive, mostly via the A3 motorway. I traveled by car and highly recommend it if you want flexibility.
By Train:
Alternatively, you can catch a regional train (RE/RB) from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) to Idstein (Taunus). The journey usually takes about 40-50 minutes with no need to change trains.
I drove from Frankfurt and reached Idstein, a charming town that is easily accessible for a half day visit. I parked at Idstein Stadthalle around 14:11. The parking spot was easy to find and located perfectly close to the old town center — I highly recommend parking there if you're visiting by car.
The best part? It was quite affordable! I paid just 4.50 € when I left around 18:41 after exploring the town at a leisurely pace.
First Stop: Union Church (Unionskirche)

After parking, I started my walk towards the heart of the old town. My first stop was supposed to be the Union Church, one of Idstein’s most famous landmarks.
Unfortunately, when I arrived, there was a wedding taking place inside, so I couldn’t go in and admire the stunning baroque interiors that it's known for. But even from the outside, the church looked impressive — grand, peaceful, and beautifully set against the backdrop of colorful old houses.
I promised myself I’d come back another time to see the interior paintings!
Wandering through Obergasse — Like Walking in a Fairytale
Leaving the church behind, I wandered into Obergasse, one of the most charming streets in Idstein.
Honestly, I completely fell in love here.
The narrow cobblestone lane is lined with gorgeous half-timbered houses, each one looking more magical than the last.
Many houses are slightly crooked, with colorful facades and beautifully carved wooden details — it felt like stepping straight into a Brothers Grimm fairytale.
I took my time walking through the street, soaking in the atmosphere, taking photos, and just enjoying how peaceful and authentic the place felt.

Kids will love spotting crooked houses and pretending to be knights at the Witches’ Tower!
Quick Stop: Tourist Information and Killingerhaus Museum
Since I like to have a map or a little brochure whenever I explore a new town, I made a stop at the Tourist Information Office, which is inside the Killingerhaus — one of the most beautiful buildings in Idstein, with its intricate timber-framed facade.
While I was there, I also visited the small museum inside the Killingerhaus. The best part?
It’s completely free to visit!
It gave me a lovely glimpse into Idstein’s history, with displays of old furniture, town models, and historic photos. It only took about 15–20 minutes to walk through, but it was well worth it.
Coffee Break at Aroma Coffee House
After a bit of walking, I decided it was time for a little break. I stopped at Aroma Coffee House, a cozy café just a short stroll from the old town area.
I grabbed a cappuccino and sat outside for a while, just people-watching and enjoying the relaxed vibe of the town.
It was so nice to slow down and enjoy Idstein’s chill vibe! — something you sometimes miss when you travel from one big European city to another.

My Walking Tour: All the Places I Visited in Idstein
After my coffee break, I continued my relaxed walking tour around town. Here’s everything I managed to visit — and a few thoughts from my experience in Idstein, which definitely made me envy heads for not discovering it sooner.
König-Adolf-Platz (King Adolf Square)
This is the lively heart of Idstein’s old town — a beautiful open square surrounded by half-timbered buildings painted in bright, cheerful colors.
I spent a good amount of time here just admiring the architecture.
The Lion Fountain (Löwenbrunnen)
Right in the middle of König-Adolf-Platz stands the Lion Fountain, featuring a stone lion — the heraldic symbol of Nassau.
It’s a simple fountain but feels like the centerpiece of the square.
Crooked House (Schiefes Haus)
One of my favorite spots in town was the Crooked House.
It’s exactly what it sounds like — a leaning, tilted timbered house that looks like it could topple over but has somehow survived centuries.
I couldn’t stop taking pictures of it from different angles — it’s ridiculously photogenic!

Town Hall (Rathaus)

Just a few steps from the Crooked House is the old Town Hall, painted in striking red and white colors.
I loved how even functional buildings in Idstein are full of character and history.
Chancellery Gate (Kanzleitor)
Walking through the Chancellery Gate felt like stepping into another world, especially since Idstein is easily accessible from outside of Frankfurt.
The archway once protected the old palace grounds, and today it makes for an awesome frame for photos of the town beyond.
The Old County Court and Former Palace Grounds

Beyond the gate, I wandered around the former palace grounds, where beautiful historic buildings like the Old County Court, Prince’s Palace, and Tithe Barn still stand proudly.
Each corner told a story of Idstein’s past — you could almost feel the weight of centuries here.
Witches’ Tower (Hexenturm)

Of course, no trip to Idstein is complete without visiting the Witches’ Tower.
Even though the dark name hints at witch trials of the past, the tower itself felt more fascinating than spooky, making me think Idstein is a place of enchanting history.
It’s a solid, imposing stone structure and one of Idstein’s true icons.
Quick Tip for Idstein: Explore the Witches' Tower
Grab the key at the tourist office to climb the 165 steps of Idstein’s oldest building, the Witches' Tower. Enjoy stunning panoramic views of the old town, Grosser Feldberg, and Goldener Grund. Despite its name, no witches were ever held here—the real prison was a now-demolished tower. Don’t miss the memorial plaque at the base honoring persecuted women. A must-visit spot for history buffs and photo lovers alike!
Palace Garden (Schlossgarten)
Right behind the Witches' Tower, I found a quiet spot to rest — the Palace Garden.
It’s not very big, but it’s beautifully maintained and offers a peaceful green space with views of the tower and surrounding historic buildings.
Tithe Barn (Zehntscheune) and Old Fire Station

On my way back, I passed by the Tithe Barn, a large timbered structure where farmers used to store their agricultural tithes.
Right nearby, the Old Fire Station caught my eye — small but charming, and now used for local exhibitions.
Civic Hall and Fresenius University Campus
Before wrapping up, I passed by the Civic Hall and admired the Fresenius University campus, which blends old-world charm with youthful energy.
Imagine attending classes in a historic building like that!
Marktplatz (Market Square)

My final stop before heading back to my car was the Market Square (Marktplatz).
It was lively but not crowded, full of small shops, cafés, and people just enjoying their afternoon — exactly the vibe I wanted for a relaxed day trip.
