What We Did
We spent a Saturday morning at Opel Zoo in Kronberg im Taunus โ about 20 minutes from Frankfurt by S-Bahn. With two kids under 8, we wanted something that wasn't overwhelming, didn't require a full-day commitment, and wouldn't cost a fortune. The zoo delivers on all three.
First impression: it's clean, green, and compact enough that kids don't get tired. But it's not small โ 1,800 animals, 180 species, and a genuinely impressive elephant house (the Panzernashรถrner). The whole visit took us about 4 hours including a picnic lunch.
The highlights for kids:
- The petting zoo (Streichelzoo) โ goats, rabbits, guinea pigs you can feed
- Pony rides on weekends (~โฌ3-5)
- The Madagaskar house โ lemurs, chameleons, walk-through aviary
- Playgrounds scattered around โ good pit stops between animals
- Elephant feeding (check times at the entrance)

Our spend (family of 4):

How to Get There
By Public Transport (Easiest)
- S-Bahn S3 or S4 from Frankfurt Hauptwache โ Kronberg Sรผd (~20 min)
- From there, Bus 262 โ Opel-Zoo stop (5 min)
- Or walk ~15 min through Kronberg town (nice old town, worth a look)
Ticket tip: If you're in Frankfurt with the VRM guest ticket (many hotels offer this), local trains are free. Otherwise, an RMV day pass for the Frankfurt ABC zone covers it (~โฌ8.50/adult, kids free with family card).
By Car
- A66 โ Kronberg exit โ follow signs to Opel-Zoo
- Parking: โฌ4/day, plenty of spaces
Opening Hours (2026)
| Season | Hours |
|---|---|
| Summer (Apr-Sep) | 9:00 โ 18:00 |
| June, July, August | 9:00 โ 19:00 |
| Winter (Oct-Mar) | 9:00 โ 17:00 |
| Dec 24 & 31 | 9:00 โ 15:00 |
| Jan 1 | 10:00 โ 17:00 |
Last entry: 1 hour before closing. But you can stay until dark and leave through turnstiles โ nice flexibility.
Our tip: Arrive at 9:00 when the zoo opens. The elephants are most active before 11:00, and it's quieter before the midday rush.
What to Bring
- Picnic โ there are plenty of grassy areas and tables. The on-site Gastronomie is fine (pretzels, pizza, coffee) but a picnic saves money and lets kids eat when THEY want.
- Cash โ parking and some small vendors prefer it
- Rain jacket โ you're outdoors, and Frankfurt weather changes fast
- The zoo app (free) โ has an audio guide and map
- Stroller โ paths are paved and flat, easy with wheels
Mistakes to Avoid
-
Confusing it with Frankfurt Zoo. Frankfurt Zoo (Zoologischer Garten) is the smaller, urban zoo right in the city (U6 to "Zoo" station). Opel Zoo is in Kronberg, 20 min away. Opel Zoo is bigger, has elephants, and is far better for a family morning. Frankfurt Zoo is fine for a quick 2-hour visit if you're already downtown.

-
Skipping the Madagaskar house. It's indoors (great if it rains) and often overlooked because it's tucked away.
-
Not checking feeding times. Elephant feeding is the highlight for most kids. Ask at the entrance or check the daily board.
-
Going on a hot afternoon without water. There are fountains, but bring your own bottles.
FAQ
Is Opel Zoo stroller-friendly? Yes โ paved paths throughout. Wheelchairs available to borrow at the entrance.
Can I bring my dog? Yes, on a leash. Entry is โฌ2 and they give you a hygiene bag.

Do I need to book tickets in advance? No โ walk-up at the box office is fine. They also sell online vouchers if you want to gift a visit.
Is it worth it for adults without kids? Honestly, it's a family-focused zoo. If you're an adult pair without kids, you'd probably prefer Frankfurt Zoo or a bigger zoo like Frankfurt's. But if you love elephants and want a relaxed morning, it's still lovely.
Best time to visit? Weekday mornings (9-11am) are quietest. Summer weekends are busier but never feels packed like the bigger zoos.
Verdict
Opel Zoo is a solid family day trip from Frankfurt โ affordable, easy to reach without a car, and genuinely enjoyable for kids. Go early, hit the elephants first, pack a picnic, and you've got a relaxed half-day that everyone enjoys.
Not for you if: you're an adult without kids wanting a "major zoo" experience (go to Frankfurt Zoo or drive to Opel... actually, just go to Opel Zoo for the elephants).
