Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) sits about 15km south of the city centre. The good news: getting into Cologne is straightforward. The S13 S-Bahn train runs directly to Köln Hauptbahnhof in 15 minutes, and if you already have a Deutschlandticket, it costs you nothing extra. Here's every option with actual costs and timings.

For almost everyone arriving at CGN, the S13 is the answer. It's direct, frequent, cheap, and drops you at Köln Hauptbahnhof — the Cathedral is 200 metres from the front exit.

For a group of four splitting the fare, a taxi works out comparable to or cheaper than four individual train tickets, plus door-to-door convenience.

Uber and Ride-Hailing

Uber operates at CGN airport. Open the app on arrival to see current prices — they vary but typically land in the €20-35 range to city centre, similar to taxi prices. During peak hours or surge pricing, taxis from the rank can actually be cheaper and more predictable.

Rental Car

All major car hire companies (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Sixt) have desks at CGN airport. Driving to Cologne city centre takes 20-30 minutes via the A59 motorway.

The catch: central Cologne parking is expensive (€20-30+ per day in most central car parks) and the city is very walkable once you're in. Renting a car only makes sense if you're continuing on a road trip — to the Rhine Valley, Black Forest, or across into the Netherlands or Belgium.

Arriving with a Deutschlandticket

If you already pay the monthly Deutschlandticket (€58/month as of 2026), the S13 from CGN airport to Köln Hauptbahnhof is fully included. CGN serves both Cologne and Bonn, which is why it's officially "Cologne Bonn Airport." If you're flying with Ryanair, Wizz Air, or other low-cost carriers, CGN is often the airport they use rather than Frankfurt.

Here's how the two airports compare for reaching Cologne:

Once you step off the S13 at Köln Hbf, you're essentially in the heart of the city:

• Trams and U-Bahn: Multiple lines depart from directly outside the station for reaching your hotel

If your hotel is in the centre, there's a good chance you can walk there directly from the Hauptbahnhof. Cologne's main sights cluster tightly around the Cathedral and Rhine.
