🇵🇹 We visited Portugal in April and found it close to perfect — warm enough to swim, wildflowers everywhere, no summer crowds. But the right time for you depends on what you're after.

Portugal is genuinely one of Europe's most all-season destinations. The cities are good year-round. The Algarve beaches peak in summer. The Douro Valley harvest is spectacular in autumn. Porto in winter is atmospheric and quiet.

That said, some months are clearly better than others — and the "best" time depends entirely on where in Portugal you're going and what you want from the trip. Here's an honest month-by-month breakdown to help you decide.

Events: Christmas lights in Lisbon (Rua Augusta illuminations are impressive). New Year's Eve fireworks in Lisbon.

Best Time to Visit by Region

Lisbon

Best: May, June, September, October — warm, manageable crowds, long days. Avoid: August peak (very crowded, expensive). Winter: Perfectly viable — mild and full of culture.

Porto

Best: May–June, September. Porto is excellent year-round but spring and early autumn offer the best balance. Rainy season: November–February brings rain. The city is still worth visiting (the light is moody and beautiful) but bring a jacket.

Algarve (Lagos, Albufeira, Faro)

Best beaches: July–September for warmth; May–June for fewer crowds + warm enough. Best overall: May or September — ideal temperatures, warm sea, manageable crowds. Avoid if crowds bother you: July–August. Faro and the Ria Formosa: Excellent year-round for nature — the lagoon is always beautiful.

We visited the Algarve in April and it was wonderful — Albufeira was uncrowded, Lagos was perfect for hiking the clifftops, and Faro was blissfully quiet.

Douro Valley

Best: Late September–October for the harvest. April–May for green spring vineyards. Avoid July–August (extreme heat).

Sintra

Best: March–June, September–October (before or after the summer peak). Arrive before 09:30 regardless of season.

Azores

Best: July–September for the mildest weather and whale watching peak. But the Azores are verdant and interesting year-round.

Madeira

Best: Year-round. April–October offers the most reliable weather. The Flower Festival in April is spectacular.

Our Honest Verdict

Best overall month to visit Portugal: May. Nearly perfect weather across the whole country. Crowds still manageable. Sea warming up for Algarve swimming. Sintra and Lisbon can be explored without fighting tour groups. Douro Valley is lush and green. Prices haven't hit peak.

Runner-up: September (end of summer, warmest sea, harvest begins in the Douro).

Best for cities specifically: October — warm, uncrowded, beautiful autumn light.

Best for beaches only: July–August — just accept that it's crowded and book ahead.

Best value months: January, February, November — lowest prices, fewest crowds, but cooler and wetter.
