As a travel writer based here in Germany, I've had the immense privilege of exploring countless European cities. Yet, few have captivated me quite like Graz, Austria's often-overlooked second city. While Vienna and Salzburg steal much of the spotlight, Graz truly shines as a vibrant hub of culture, cuisine, and history, earning its UNESCO World Heritage status for good reason. If you're looking for a destination that offers a relaxed pace, genuine local experiences, and incredible food without the overwhelming crowds, then spending one week in Graz is an absolute must.
I first visited Graz a couple of years ago, drawn by whispers of its culinary scene and unique architecture. What I found was a city that effortlessly blends medieval charm with modern design, a place where historic courtyards lead to avant-garde art museums, and where traditional Styrian dishes are served alongside innovative fusion cuisine. It's a city that invites you to slow down, wander, and truly immerse yourself.
This 7-day itinerary for Graz is crafted from my own experiences and discoveries, designed to help you uncover the city's best-kept secrets and popular highlights without feeling rushed. We'll dive deep into its history, savour its flavours, and even venture out into the stunning Styrian countryside. Get ready to fall in love with Graz, just as I did!
Why Graz for a Week? Beyond a Quick Stopover
You might be thinking, "A whole week in Graz? Isn't it a smaller city?" And that's precisely why it's perfect for a week-long exploration! Unlike larger capitals where you're constantly rushing from one major sight to the next, Graz allows for a more leisurely pace. This extended stay gives you the chance to:
- Experience the local rhythm: Enjoy morning coffee like a local, browse the markets without hurry, and truly soak in the atmosphere.
- Dive deeper into its culture: Visit more museums, explore different neighbourhoods, and appreciate the nuances of Styrian life.
- Savour the culinary scene: With a week, you can try a wider range of restaurants, from traditional Buschenschanken to modern eateries, and even take a food tour.
- Take a rewarding day trip: The surrounding Styrian region, often called the "Green Heart of Austria," offers stunning landscapes, vineyards, and castles that are easily accessible from Graz.
- Balance sightseeing with relaxation: There's ample time to relax in a park, enjoy a long lunch, or simply watch the world go by from a café terrace.
In my opinion, anything less than 5-7 days for a city like Graz means you'd be missing out on its true essence.

Getting Around Graz: Easy & Enjoyable
Graz is wonderfully compact and incredibly easy to navigate. When I visited, I found that the city centre, including the Old Town and many key attractions, is very walkable. You'll spend most of your time on foot, enjoying the charming streets and hidden courtyards.
For anything further afield, Graz boasts an excellent public transport system, primarily trams and buses.
- On Foot: The best way to explore the Old Town. Wear comfortable shoes!
- Trams & Buses: Efficient and reliable. Single tickets cost around €2.60 (valid for 1 hour), or you can buy a 24-hour ticket for €6.10, a 72-hour ticket for €13.60, or a weekly ticket for €17.50. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines at stops, in tobacco shops (Trafik), or via the GrazMobil app.
- The Graz Card: For extended stays, especially if you plan on visiting many museums and using public transport frequently, the Graz Card is definitely worth considering. It offers free public transport and free or discounted entry to many attractions. A 24-hour card costs €19.50, a 48-hour card €29.50, and a 72-hour card €34.50. My detailed review covers whether it's the right choice for your trip.
Where to Stay in Graz: My Top Recommendations
Choosing the right base can significantly enhance your trip. Based on my own stays and research, I recommend focusing on these areas:
- Old Town / City Centre: Ideal for first-timers. You're within walking distance of most major attractions, restaurants, and shops. Expect a lively atmosphere and a range of hotels from boutique to luxury.
- Lend District: Just across the Mur River from the Old Town, Lend is a vibrant, up-and-coming neighbourhood known for its artistic flair, independent boutiques, and diverse culinary scene. It's still very central but offers a slightly edgier vibe.
- Near the Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof): Convenient if you're arriving by train or planning day trips. It's a short tram ride or a 15-20 minute walk to the Old Town, and you'll often find more budget-friendly options here.
During my visit, I opted for a charming hotel just off Herrengasse, which gave me easy access to everything. For those on a budget, Graz also has some excellent hostels and guesthouses.
