The tradition of traveling through Europe with a Eurail pass dates back to the 1960s. It's still in use today. I used it on my first trip to Europe, 2006. While a rail ticket is a flexible and affordable way to travel Europe, it is not the best choice for everyone.

This guide will cover all you need to know about Eurail Pass, including who should purchase it and who should not, which quirks to be aware of, and how to maximize the value of your Eurail Pass.

What is the Eurail Pass?

Via Eurail.com ( Eurail Map 2021.pdf)

The Eurail Pass, an all-in one pass, allows unlimited train travel (including high-speed trains), across 33 European countries.

Not sure a pass beats point-to-point tickets for your route? Run the numbers in our free Eurail Pass calculator. And if a train lets you down mid-trip, the train delay compensation calculator shows what the operator owes you.

Except for a few exceptions this rail pass allows you to hop on any train by simply showing your pass. Some train routes may require you to reserve a seat -- I'll discuss this later).

A Eurail Pass's flexibility is what makes it so great. You can travel wherever you want to at any time, with very little planning. You can hop on a train to go anywhere you want, even if you don't plan to dig a particular city. You might have met some interesting people who are going to a new place. If you don't want to pay for a last-minute ticket, you can tag along.

Eurail Passes can only be purchased outside of Europe. They will not ship to non-European nations.

UPDATE Eurail now offers a digital mobile pass. It is sent to your smartphone via an app so that you can buy it anywhere.

I recommend purchasing your rail pass directly through Cread.php

Eurail Single Country Pass

First-Class Rail Passes vs. Second-Class

Second-class tickets can be purchased as standard train tickets. Second-class is extremely comfortable, so you don't need to upgrade to the first class unless your budget allows.

Tickets for first-class are typically 30%-40% more costly than tickets for second-class. First-class tickets will have larger seats and more room. You'll also find it quieter. On the train, you might be offered basic snacks or drinks for free.

Access to the First Class Lounge at the station will be granted if it exists. These lounges typically offer free food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages.

High-Speed Trains & Seat Reservations

High-speed trains often require rail pass holders to pay an additional fee to reserve a seat.

How do you know if you need a reservation?

It's easy. The Eurail Rail Planner app will show you which trains require a reservation. You can also visit Bahn.com to enter your travel date/time. If a train requires reservations (see image below), you will see a "R" symbol to the right. This train requires a reservation.

Which Countries Require a Train Reservation?

Reservations are required for all Thalys high speed trains (which, notably, travel between Amsterdam & Paris) and all high-speed train services in France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Portugal.

Reservations for trains in other countries can be made, but they are not necessary.

How much do seat reservations cost?

While most reservations are priced between EUR5-10, some lines can be as high as EUR30.

How do you make a seat reservation?

Reservations can be made at almost any station. Simply go to the ticket counter and tell them what train you would like (they will need your date and time).

Reservations can be made at the station up to a hour before departure or months in advance. I recommend that you make reservations at least a few days ahead of time so you don’t have to worry about it last minute. You never know how long the line at the service window will be.

However, you can also book a reservation online through Cread.php or their Eurail Rail Planner App. There are some considerations to make:

  • E-ticket reservations may be made up to three hours prior to departure.

  • Reservations for paper tickets must be made at least six days prior to the departure of the train.

Not all trains, especially in France, have enough reservations for passengers who use rail passes. To ensure that you have the best possible journey, it is wise to book your reservation in advance.

How To Buy Eurail Passes

Eurail passes can now be purchased in either a paper or digital ticket. Both are available directly at Cread.php

How to Buy a Paper Eurail Pass

Important: Eurail passes made of physical paper are not sold in Europe. They cannot even be shipped to European addresses.

It takes about 2 weeks to ship your physical paper passes. Premium shipping takes one week. It can be purchased at Cread.php.

How to Buy a Digital Mobile Eurail Pass

The best thing about digital mobile tickets is that they can be purchased even if you aren't in Europe. You don't need to wait for delivery. You can purchase it at Cread.php.

NOTE: While the mobile pass can be used for any worldwide pass, there are some countries that do not accept the mobile pass such as Estonia, Greece Islands, Great Britain and Ireland, Latvia, North Macedonia, and North Macedonia.

Is The Eurail Pass A Good Deal? A Quick Overview

The Eurail Pass is a great deal, depending on how you travel. However, it is not always the most cost-effective way to travel Europe by train. The convenience factor is a major advantage of the Eurail Pass. Here are some guidelines to help you decide if a rail pass suits your needs.

Last-minute travel on medium and long-distance routes is possible with a rail pass.

If you travel frequently and need to cover long distances, a rail pass is a good deal. This is because long-distance trains can be very costly if booked late.

If you're less than 28 years old, A Rail Pass can often be a great deal.

You get a Youth pass which gives you a good discount, making the rail pass a very attractive option. Although you might spend less overall by booking single tickets in advance, the difference is usually negligible. Personally, I believe the convenience of the pass makes it worth the extra cost.

You can make plans and book tickets in advance: Point to point is more affordable.

It's almost always cheaper to purchase point-to-point tickets if your plans are in place and you book your tickets at least two months before departure. Booking a few days before departure can save you significant money.

Staying regional is a good idea: Point-to-point is more affordable.

Regional trains usually have a fixed price depending on the distance covered so it is not necessary to book in advance.

Eurail Pass Vs Single, Point-To-Point Train Tickets: In-Depth Analysis

It takes some math and a lot of effort to determine the value of a rail ticket vs single tickets. Although I have tried to explain it below, it is not an exact science.

Understanding the Point-To-Point Train Ticket Prices

Two pricing options are available for single train tickets:

Variable-Price Train Tickets

Variable Fares are similar to airline tickets and change based on demand, departure time and time before departure. This pricing model is used by all high-speed trains.

Most rail companies begin selling tickets 60-90 days before departure. This is when you will get the best fares. Prices tend to rise with the departure date, but it is possible to still find good fares by booking a few weeks ahead.

However, prices can go up if you book less than a week before departure. Prices will also rise if you wait too long.

Important: Train tickets that are the cheapest are not transferable or refundable. This means that your ticket will only be valid for the date and time stated on the ticket. You are out of luck if you miss the train.

Fixed-Price Train Tickets

Fixed-Price Fares are based on distance.

Fixed-price tickets are more common for regional and slower trains. Fixed price tickets are available on regional and slower trains. The ticket's price does not change regardless of when you purchase it.

How to Find the Best Tain Ticket Prices

Creativeref:1100l12635 allows you to easily check train prices. Simply enter your route and date, and it will display the lowest price for all trains on that day.

Tickets prices can fluctuate depending on when you book them so this is only an estimate. Tickets for trains leaving tomorrow morning will have different prices than tickets for trains departing in two months.

Because Trainline lists the actual train price (they don’t add any markup), I book my tickets online with Trainline . If you want to make sure you are getting the best price, you can visit each country's National Rail Service site. Creativeref:1100l12635 makes booking easier.

Calculating the Daily Price of Rail Passes

It's useful to determine the daily cost of a rail pass in order to compare single tickets with passes.

Eurail Global Continuous Pass (Price Per Day)

Pass LengthYouth Pass (under 28)Adult (28-60)Senior (Over 60)
15 days$402 ($27 per day)$536 ($36 per day)$483 ($32 per day)
22 Days$471 ($22 per day)$627 ($29 per day)$564 ($26 per day)
One month$609 ($20 per day)$811 ($27 per day)$730 ($24 per day)
Two months$663 ($11 per day)$885 ($15 per day)$796 ($13 per day)
Three Months$819 ($9 per day)$1091 ($12 per day)$983 ($11 per day)

Notice: A Global Continuous Pass's "price per daily" can be misleading as you won't likely travel by train every day. You can get a better idea of how often you will use the train to help you estimate.

Eurail Global Flexi Price (Price per Day)

Pass LengthYouth Pass (under 28)Adult (28-60)Senior (Over 60)
4 Travel Days (within a Month)$227 ($57 per day)$289 ($72 per day)$267 ($67 per day)
5 Travel Days (within a Month)$257 ($51 per day)$341 ($68 per day)$307 ($61 per day)
7 Travel Days (within a Month)$304 ($43 per day)$405 ($58 per day)$365 ($52 per day)
10 Travel Days (within 2 Months)$364 ($36 per day)$485 ($49 per day)$437 ($43 per day)
15 days travel (within 2 months).$448 ($30 per day)$597 ($40 per day)$537 ($36 per day)

Pricing for Single Train Tickets

To get the lowest prices on high speed trains, you should buy your tickets as soon as possible. Most train tickets can usually be bought between 60 and 90 days before departure, but it is fine to buy tickets a few weeks in advance.

Noting: High-speed train ticket prices can change depending on the departure time. Prices for high-speed trains will fluctuate based on departure time (i.e., rush hour). This could result in big savings. You can look at Creativeref:1100l12635 for more information.

Let's take a look at some examples of ticket prices:

  • Paris to Nice

    • Buy Two Days Prior to Departure: EUR77-EUR106 ($90-$125).

    • 2 Days before departure: EUR69 (81).

    • Three weeks before departure: EUR55 ($65).

    • 8 Weeks Preparation: EUR21 ($25).

  • Paris to Amsterdam

    • 2 Days before departure: EUR135 ($159).

    • Three weeks before departure: EUR97 ($114).

    • Purchased 6 Weeks Prior to Departure: EUR54 ($64).

    • 8 Weeks Preparation: EUR35 (42 Pounds).

  • London to Paris (Eurostar Train

    • 2 Days before departure: EUR234 ($267)

    • Three weeks before departure: EUR124 ($146).

    • Six weeks before departure: EUR55 ($65).

  • Rome to Florence

    • Next Day Departure Day Purchased: EUR35-EUR60 (41-$70).

    • 8 Weeks Preparation: EUR35-EUR63 (45-$75).

Booking a few weeks in advance can help you save quite a bit.

Calculating the Rail Pass Vs Single Tickets

You can now compare the daily cost of the pass with the price of a single ticket.

Let's take the Paris-Amsterdam high-speed Thalys train as an example.

  • 10 travel days Flexi Global Pass equals $36 per day. Rail pass holders will need to pay $33 for reservations on this train, so the total cost would be approximately $70.

  • Last-minute bookings for Paris to Amsterdam train tickets are $120-$180, so the Eurail Pass is a great option.

  • However, booking 2 months in advance costs $45 and is a lot less than a rail pass.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you are looking for flexibility and don't want the headache of planning your entire trip in advance (and I know you can spend hours planning), a rail pass is a great option.

Point-to-point tickets are more practical if you plan your trip well in advance. You can also buy tickets up to a month before your journey. Purchase Train Tickets Europe

I have been on European trips both with and without a Eurail Pass. I enjoyed being able to jump on and off the train at my leisure. I didn't need to plan anything and could decide where I wanted to go on my own. The trip I bought point-to-point tickets required me to plan a lot more, which can prove stressful. I purchased most of my tickets around 2-3 weeks before my trip. After I had accumulated everything, I compared it with the cost of a train pass. I was able to save about $100 by purchasing tickets individually. To ensure that everything would work together, I spent _many_hours planning. It was probably not worth the extra time spent planning.

How To Maximize The Value Of Your Eurail Pass

These are some additional tips and tricks that will help you get the most out of your Eurail Pass.

Combine Pass with Point-To-Point Tickets

Longer (i.e. more expensive) train rides are the best use of passes. It is more cost-effective to travel on longer (i.e., more expensive) trains. Therefore it makes no economic sense to spend one day on a pass for cheap rides that are only $15-$30. To maximize rail pass value, I combine Flexi Passes with inexpensive point-to-point tickets.

Wait To Write In Your Travel Dates

It is not uncommon for tickets to be checked on trains. I wait until I see the conductor and fill out the pass.

Don't fill out your entire itinerary. Plans can change, and you can't change the dates once you've filled them in.

Make sure to plan ahead in order to compare the different passes

Compare rail pass plans and plan your trip. While you don't want to buy a pass with too many travel days, you don't want it to be too expensive. After you purchase your pass, you can't change it. You also don't get any refunds for days that you haven't used.

The passes allow unlimited train rides per day

Your rail pass allows unlimited train travel per day (i.e. You can take multiple train rides daily from midnight to midnight.

If you are planning a long-distance trip, this is an option. The train ride from Paris to Lyon takes approximately 2 hours and runs between $40-$90. You could also take an early train to Lyon and spend the day exploring the city, before returning to Paris at night. This would only cost you one travel day.

The Eurail Pass now covers the Eurostar Train between London and Paris

Travelers will be thrilled to learn that the Eurail Pass now includes the Eurostar train, which is a very expensive option. Pass holders can get a great deal by paying an additional EUR30, but it can still be worth it as a last-minute Eurostar tickets can cost $130 to $180.

Insurance, Fine Print, and Refunds

Pass Protection insurance is required to protect paper passes. You can transfer a mobile pass to another phone if you lose or break your phone.

Rail Passes Doesn't Cover Subways/Suburban Metro/Trams

You can't use your rail pass on the subway, or any other intra-city public transport. While some may be valid for trains to/from airports, this is a wasteful way to travel.
