Choosing the Right Seat: Tips for a Comfortable Long-Haul Flight

One of the first steps to ensuring a comfortable flight is choosing the right seat. Different types of seats are available on planes, ranging from economy to premium economy and business class.

While economy seats are the most common and affordable option, they often lack legroom and recline capabilities. If you have the budget, consider upgrading to premium economy or business class for added comfort.

When choosing a seat, consider your preferences and needs. If you value legroom, opt for an exit row or bulkhead seat. These seats typically have more space for stretching your legs. If you prefer a window seat for a view or an aisle seat for easy access to the restroom, take that into account as well.

Additionally, consider using seat selection tools offered by airlines to see which seats are available and choose the best one for your needs.

Carry an Airplane seat with you

If you are a frequent traveller or someone who frequently uses aeroplanes, it might be tempting to carry an aeroplane seat with you. While it may seem like a strange concept, there are some reasons why having your own airplane seat could be beneficial.

Firstly, comfort is a major concern when it comes to air travel. Many people find the seats on aeroplanes to be uncomfortable, especially during long-haul flights.

By bringing your own seat, you can ensure that you are sitting in a position that is comfortable for you, avoiding any potential backaches or discomfort.

Packing Essentials: What to Bring on a Long Plane Ride

Packing the right essentials can greatly enhance your comfort during a long plane ride. Start by creating a checklist of essential items to pack. This may include a travel pillow, eye mask, and noise-cancelling headphones.

A travel pillow can provide much-needed support for your neck and help you sleep better. An eye mask can block out light and help you relax while noise-cancelling headphones can drown out the noise of the plane and provide a more peaceful environment.

When packing, it’s important to be efficient and avoid overpacking. Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, and pack them in a way that maximizes space. Rolling clothes instead of folding them can save space and prevent wrinkles. Additionally, consider using packing cubes or compression bags to further optimize space in your luggage.

A compact Carry-on Suitcase or Carry-on Bag

A compact carry-on suitcase is a small, portable luggage option designed to meet the size restrictions imposed by airlines for cabin baggage. These suitcases are ideal for short trips or travellers who prefer to pack efficiently and avoid checking in larger bags.

A smaller bag for the essentials

The importance of the second smaller bag lies not in its overall quality, but in its functionality. It should be lightweight, convenient to carry, and easy to locate your essential items such as your passport, travel documents, wallet, keys, and phone. It is advisable to choose a bag with zips for extra security.

A travel pillow

Many airlines offer small pillows on long flights that are intended to provide comfort. However, I have found that these pillows are most effective when placed behind your lower back or on your side rather than specifically for supporting your neck.

Alternatively, you can adjust your headrest to provide some form of support for your neck. Even better, you can bring your own high-quality travel pillow with you. These newer designs are incredibly compact and prioritize offering support for your neck at the front and on the side, allowing you to sleep comfortably while sitting upright.

Noise-cancelling headphones

It’s difficult to envision a time before the invention of noise-cancelling headphones. Back then, enduring a long flight meant being subjected to an overwhelming cacophony of rattling drink trolleys, wailing infants, and various cabin notifications.

Although most airlines offer earplugs and headphones to passengers, the only effective way to truly drown out the noise is by using noise-cancelling headphones. If there was ever an opportune moment to make the decision to purchase a pair, it would be right before embarking on a lengthy flight.

This is one of the travel essentials for me because it helps me relax when there are kids around crying

A luggage tracker

This is the newest addition to my list as we all know that in 2022 so many flights were delayed in Europe with people’s luggage not reaching their destinations. As a result, a luggage tracker has now become a vital item for any traveller in 2023.

These clever gadgets are especially beneficial during flights that include a layover or when carrying bulky items like car seats, which usually take longer to reach the baggage handling area.

Prior to your flight, it’s essential to ensure that you securely attach the tag to your checked-in luggage and also download the necessary app. This way, you can easily keep track of your bag’s location throughout your journey. This also comes in handy when you have lost your luggage during your trip.

Travel Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Most of the long flights include a small toothbrush kit in their flight amenity. But in case they don’t have it it becomes one of the airplane’s essential items to carry during your long-distance flights.

Family Passport Holder

Well, I am not really sure how much of a fan you are of passport holder but I absolutely love it. I have been using a passport holder since I started travelling back in 2015. Over the period of time, I have changed many passport holders and currently using an ELASND Passport Holder which I bought last year from Amazon.

Clothing Choices: Dressing for Comfort and Style

Choosing the right clothing for a long flight is essential for both comfort and style. Opt for comfortable, breathable fabrics that allow for easy movement. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing that can constrict blood flow and cause discomfort.

Dressing in layers is also a good idea, as temperatures on planes can vary. This way, you can easily adjust your clothing to stay comfortable throughout the flight.

While comfort is important, it’s also possible to dress stylishly for a long flight. Choose clothing items that are both comfortable and fashionable. Opt for neutral colors that can be easily mixed and matched, and accessorize with scarves or statement jewellery to add a touch of style to your outfit.

Compression Socks :

Compression socks are specialized socks designed to improve circulation in the legs and feet. They are typically made from a stretchy, elastic material that applies gentle pressure to the lower limbs.

This pressure gradually decreases from the ankle upward, helping to push blood back towards the heart. So if you have a medical condition such as deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, or chronic venous insufficiency then this becomes one of the essentials for long-haul flights.

Change of Clothes

Once you have a reliable and fast case, take your time to carefully select and pack only the most important items. Most of your belongings should be packed in your checked luggage, leaving only the necessary items or items that you might need in your carry-on bag.

The main portion of space in your case should be reserved for any necessary technology such as laptops or tablets, as well as a comfortable change of clothes.

Even if you do not plan on changing during the flight, it is always a good idea to be prepared for unexpected delays or accidents, like the time a cabin crew member accidentally spilt a mango smoothie on me before our flight to India.

A Blanket or Scarf

Sometimes the temperature on the plane can fluctuate a lot. During the middle of the flight, it becomes quite chilly so it is good to have something warm with you.

Many airlines strive to keep the temperature inside the aircraft at a comfortable range of 23℃ to 25℃. However, there are instances when the temperature might decrease due to various factors, like the cool air that accompanies turbulence which can be beneficial for those prone to motion sickness.

To adapt to these unpredictable temperature changes, it is advisable to dress in light layers and carry a soft scarf or blanket. If you are short on space in your bag, simply wear a scarf or blanket during the flight.

Comfortable Shoes

Now Carrying comfortable shoes on a long-haul flight is essential to ensure your feet stay cozy and supported throughout the journey. Here are some tips on how to do it:

  • 1. Wear your heaviest and bulkiest shoes during the flight. This will save space in your suitcase and carry-on bag. Opt for comfortable sneakers or walking shoes that have good cushioning and support.
  • 2. Pack a pair of lightweight and flexible foldable shoes in your hand luggage. These are great for when you want to relax in your seat and take off your heavy shoes. Look for options made from soft materials that can easily be compressed and packed away.
  • 3. Consider compression socks or flight socks. These socks can aid circulation and reduce swelling in your feet and legs during a long flight.
  • 4. Use shoe storage bags. Place your shoes in shoe storage bags to keep them separate from your other items. This will prevent them from transferring dirt or odours to your clothes and belongings.
  • 5. Take advantage of in-flight amenities. Many airlines provide slippers or socks for passengers on long-haul flights. These may not be as comfortable as your own shoes, but they can still provide some relief.
  • 6. Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. This will make going through security checks and using the restroom more convenient.

Remember, comfortable shoes are important not only during the flight but also when exploring your destination once you arrive. Taking care of your feet during a long journey will ensure you can enjoy your trip to the fullest!

Staying Hydrated: The Importance of Drinking Water on a Plane

Staying hydrated is crucial during a long flight, as the dry cabin air can cause dehydration. Dehydration can lead to symptoms such as dry skin, fatigue, and headaches.

To stay hydrated, drink plenty of water throughout the flight. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can further dehydrate your body.

Bringing a refillable water bottle on a flight is a great way to ensure you have access to water at all times. Most airports have water fountains where you can refill your bottle before boarding the plane. Additionally, flight attendants are usually happy to refill your bottle during the flight.

A reusable water bottle

Since we promote Sustainable Travel one of the important items in such cases becomes a travel bottle. It is also a good idea to bring it along to reduce plastic waste while travelling.

We recommend you check out Hydaway reusable bottles as this is something we use as well during our trip and have absolutely liked it so far.

In-Flight Entertainment: How to Stay Entertained on a Long Flight

Staying entertained during a long flight is essential to pass the time and make the journey more enjoyable. Most airlines offer a range of in-flight entertainment options, including movies, TV shows, and games. Take advantage of these options and create a personalized entertainment plan for your flight.

Bringing a tablet or e-reader is also a great way to stay entertained. Load it up with your favourite books, movies, and TV shows before the flight. This way, you won’t have to rely solely on the in-flight options. Additionally, consider downloading podcasts or audiobooks for a more immersive entertainment experience.

A portable charger

A portable charger is a must-have not only for your flight but for your entire trip. It acts as a crucial safety measure, ensuring that you can always access important documents and details.

Moreover, it proves to be a saviour in situations like flight delays, as it keeps you entertained with your favourite content. It’s advisable to choose a charger that is compact and light in weight. In case you are travelling with a partner or family, a charger with at least two charging ports will prove to be very useful.

Well yes USB slots are still present on the flight but I can not forget that I was unlucky when I was travelling in the economy to Malaysia when the USB port was not functional on my seat so the portable charger came in handy at that time.

E-Book Reader

I always pack the E-book reader in my bag whenever I travel. It’s a lightweight device that allows me to carry multiple books in one place. Whether I’m waiting at the airport, sitting on a long flight, or relaxing by the beach, I can easily access a variety of books to keep me entertained. It’s a great way to escape into different worlds and indulge in my love for reading, without the need for physical books taking up space in my luggage.

Small Tech Pack

This tech pack is incredibly handy for storing all my chargers, SD cards, and electronic cables. It has truly simplified my life. During my road trip to Croatia, I was delighted to discover that it perfectly accommodated all my tech essentials.

However, upon returning the rental car, I accidentally left it behind on the floor. Not to worry though, I promptly ordered a new one to replace it.

Sleep Aids: Tips for Sleeping on a Plane

Getting sleep on a long flight can make the journey much more comfortable and help you adjust to a new time zone if you’re traveling internationally.

To improve your chances of getting some shut-eye, use sleep aids such as a neck pillow and earplugs. A neck pillow can provide support for your head and neck, making it easier to sleep in an upright position. Earplugs can block out noise and create a more peaceful environment.

If you prefer natural sleep aids, consider using lavender oil or melatonin. Lavender oil has calming properties and can help you relax and fall asleep. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles and can help you adjust to a new time zone.

Sleeping Mask

Yes, packing a sleeping mask for a long-haul flight can be a good idea. Sleeping masks can help block out unwanted light and create a darker environment, which can promote better sleep and help you adjust to different time zones.

They are particularly useful if you are sensitive to light or if you are travelling during daylight hours. Additionally, wearing a sleeping mask can also indicate to others that you do not wish to be disturbed, providing a signal for uninterrupted rest.

Beauty Essentials

Lip Balm

The air that circulates in an aeroplane has a humidity level of 10-20 per cent, which is much lower than the 40-60 per cent humidity that is typically found on land. To put it into perspective, even the Sahara desert has a humidity level of 25 per cent.

Therefore, it’s important to bring along moisturising beauty products on a flight, as long as they meet the requirement of being under 100mls. From my personal experience, I’ve found that the item that takes up the least amount of space in your wash bag but can make a significant difference during a flight is lip balm. These balms are often versatile and can be used on other parts of your face and hands if you lack space.

Hand sanitiser

Not exactly a beauty essential but something which is needed to keep your hygiene during a long trip. It’s a long flight and you are going to find multiple times using this to clean your hands before you eat.

Hand Lotion

If your hands get dry then it is better to carry Hand Lotion along with you. The best would be to carry a mini travel hand cream in your carry-on.

Snacks and Meals: How to Eat Well on a Long Flight

Eating well on a plane can be challenging, as the options are often limited and unhealthy. To ensure you have access to healthy snacks and meals, pack your own. Choose snacks that are easy to eat and won’t spoil, such as nuts, dried fruit, and granola bars. Avoid sugary snacks and opt for healthier alternatives.

If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, consider bringing your own meals. Many airlines allow passengers to bring their own food on board, as long as it meets certain requirements. This way, you can ensure you have access to food that meets your needs and preferences.

Stretching and Exercise: Staying Active on a Plane

Staying active during a long flight is important to prevent stiffness and promote blood circulation. While it may be challenging to move around in a cramped space, there are still ways to stay active on a plane.

Consider doing simple stretches and exercises in your seat, such as ankle rolls, shoulder shrugs, and neck stretches. These movements can help prevent muscle stiffness and improve circulation.

Taking walks around the cabin is another great way to stay active during a long flight. Get up and stretch your legs every hour or so to prevent blood clots and promote circulation.

If possible, do some yoga poses in the galley area or at the back of the plane. Yoga poses such as forward folds, seated twists, and standing stretches can help relieve tension and promote relaxation.
