Description

The Arc de Triomphe is a Neoclassical take on the ancient Roman triumphal arch style. Fifty meters tall, the view from the platform atop the arch is well worth the hike. See the dozen Parisian avenues radiating out from the arch into the City of Light. Paris is one of the most fascinating places in the world and you will find yourself right at its center. Inspired by the great arches of ancient Rome, Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe shortly after his victory at Austerlitz. Unfortunately, he never lived to see its completion. At the base of the arch, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier pays tribute to the 1.3 million French soldiers who died in World War I. Behold the eternal flame that is rekindled at 6.30 PM each evening. In addition, there is a must-see exhibition that explains the symbolic importance of this monument. The view from the top of the arch is worth climbing the 284 stairs. From your privileged position, survey all of Paris. Unlike the obligatory Eiffel Tower trip, getting into the Arc de Triomphe is an effort not all tourists undertake. Plus, with skip-the-line tickets, you’ll hardly have to break stride on your way in.

It was very cold and we were exhausted, when we came a guard called us to the stairs…I went along but the spiral stair was LONG and took a real effort to climb. My sister could not do it as it made her dizzy…she returned down and apparently took an elevator to the top before me! We should have been told of this option up front/reminded…other than that it is what it is….a very high view of the surroundings including the Eiffel and Champ Elyse, nothing more, not much of a crowd/line.

We went at night, was incredible, couldn’t find the underground access nearly got killed crossing road and told off my a lovely police man (find the tunnel), omg not for the faint hearted no lifts were working and so many steps…. But definitely worth it when you get to the top!!!

It was easy to get to the underground walkway. We took the metro and then it was a short walk. I wish we had been told that we had to climb stairs all the way to the top. I don’t remember reading that anywhere. Thank goodness you could stop at different floors to take a breather and read the various displays. The views from the top were amazing though! Well worth the climb. Just be careful and take your time climbing the spiral stairs. We went at night and the lights from the city and cars down the Champs Elysee were very nice. Very interesting to watch the drivers navigate the roundabout from the top of the Arch
